Paphos Hotels
Heralded as the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite and famously given as a gift to Cleopatra, Paphos is a romantic island full of charm and steeped in Greek mythology.
Paphos is a seamless blend of old meets new - where temples and tombs carved into the rock face overlook a modern and cosmopolitan marina and a rugged coastline is broken by gorgeous pale-sand beaches.
BeachesPaphos is a mix of soft sandy beaches and small rocky coves. With an outstanding 50km of coastline and more than a handful of coveted Blue Flag beaches, Paphos is a truly stunning beach destination. The most centrally located beach, Alykes Beach, is characterised by a very small strip of sand set below the promenade. As this usually fills up pretty quick there are man-made solariums that line the rocky coast providing the perfect place to relax with the sea at your feet. Head north to Coral Bay and you will find a sweeping, crescent shaped beach with golden sands and warm turquoise waters. The water here is shallow and calm, making it the perfect spot for families.
CultureGreek mythology enthusiasts and history buffs alike will revel in the rich culture Paphos has to offer. With a history dating back to the Neolithic period, Paphos is littered with architectural ruins from years gone by – possibly the most significant find of all is the Tomb of the Kings. Now declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, this early necropolis houses impressive catacombs carved into the rocks. Another sight not to be missed is the stunning rock formation of Aphrodite’s Rock – said to be the birthplace of the most beautiful Greek Goddess.
Food & DrinkThe cuisine in Paphos is very similar to that of its neighbour, Greece, with heavy influences from Turkey and other Middle Eastern cuisines. Small dishes, also known as meze, are a popular way to share a meal here. As many as 20 different dishes may be brought to the table making meal times a very social affair. Popular meze dishes include koupepia and vemista - vine leaves or vegetables such as peppers stuffed with mincemeat and rice. There's also lountza - smoked pork loin and, of course, the nation's most famous product - halloumi cheese. For a traditionally Cypriot drink we recommend trying the commandaria wine. Now the world’s oldest wine still in production, this tasty tipple was once proclaimed to be the “wine of kings and the king of wines” by Richard the Lionheart.
NightlifeWhile the nightlife in Paphos may be slightly tamer than other Cypriot resorts such as Aiya Napa, it is by no means quiet. With a slightly more laid-back feel, Paphos is a varied mix of chill-out bars with great views, atmospheric jaunts and clubs to keep you dancing until dawn. Start your night by the seafront with cocktails at the marina before heading to aptly named ‘Bar Street’ for fun-filled bars, live music and clubs to dance the night away.
